Sitting Too Much?
Studies show that even if you achieve the recommended amount of daily activity, if you spend the rest of your day sitting, your risk of metabolic problems can increase.
Humans are built to stand upright. Our heart, cardiovascular system, and digestive system work more effectively this way. In addition our our booty, legs, hips and back need movement. Long periods of sitting can have a negative impact on our posture, stability, spine health, and joints! Click here to learn more about the “sitting disease” and why we must address it.
Here are some tips to get you up and down from your work desk.
-
Place your trash can or recycle bin away from your desk.
-
Set an alarm on your computer, phone, watch, etc. that reminds you to stand up every 20-30 minutes (this would be a great opportunity to grab a glass of water or do 10 jumping jacks).
-
Get a standing desk! They are adjustable and can allow you to work in a standing or seated position. Click Here for a link to Amazon that includes all kinds of standing desk options. This small change in your workday can increase your metabolism as well as overall health. If you have a boss- request it! Check with your doctor and perhaps it can be prescribed.
-
If you are on a call, stand up while you're talking.
-
Request standing meetings at work.
-
Have more Face-to-Face conversations whenever possible. Ditch the email or phone call and walk to your co-workers desk for a question.
